Position Title: Library Director
Location: Sparta, Wisconsin
Starting wage: $52,000 & City benefits
Hours: 40 hours per week, some evenings and weekends

Job snapshot: Under the direct supervision of the public library board of trustees, the library director is responsible for the operations of the library and the development and implementation of its service program, including: (A) assisting the board with long-range planning and policy development, and managing all library resources, including human resources; (B) coordination with the Winding Rivers Library System (WRLS) to promote and improve system service; (C) community outreach and liaison with city council, county agencies, and community organizations; and (D) overseeing the maintenance and safety of the library building and grounds. The library director hires, mentors, and supervises all librarians, assistants, substitutes, and volunteers who work in the library.
This is an exciting time for the Sparta Free Library, a 2-story Carnegie Library located in Monroe County in western Wisconsin. The library is an active member of the Winding Rivers Library System with 7 full time and 2 part time staff working as a team to provide innovative services to the growing community. Excellence in children’s, teen, and adult programming, technology training and special events are hallmarks of this historic, community-oriented library. The library board of trustees, staff, city leadership and residents are joining hands to implement a road map for developing even more robust services and an extensive expansion and renovation for our community. With a 70% funding commitment from the City and active involvement with the Friends of the Sparta Free Library Group, the campaign committee is on its way to raising the additional funding required.
Community snapshot: Sparta is a growing community located off Interstate 90, in western Wisconsin, only 25 minutes east of La Crosse and 90 minutes west of Madison. Labeled “The Bicycling Capital of America”, it is home to the Sparta-Elroy Bike Trail (the nation’s first rails-to-trails bike trail) as well as the Deke Slayton Memorial Space and Bicycling Museum.
Nestled in the heart of the Driftless Region, recreational opportunities abound year-round. The city has an outstanding Parks and Recreation Department, an 18-hole golf course, and an updated aquatic park. Educational requirements: MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution and Grade 1 Wisconsin Public Librarian Certification. (Applicants who do not currently hold Grade 1 Certification must agree to acquire same within 6 months of hire.)
Preferred experience: 3 years of public library experience or 5 years of experience in a service institution with comparable demands and responsibilities; i.e. supervision of professional staff, working directly with the public, working with governing boards or bodies.
Desirable candidate skills include effective board relations; fundraising; budgeting; grant writing; knowledge of library technologies; excellent oral and written communication.
Salary: Beginning at $52,000 commensurate with training and experience, benefits (health and dental insurance, sick leave, paid vacations and holidays, plus enrollment in the Wisconsin Retirement System)
