Tahquamenon Area School/Public Library

Library Advisory Board is seeking a motivated, creative, and outgoing individual to fill the position of Librarian/Director for the Tahquamenon Area School/Public Library in Newberry, Michigan. Newberry is centrally located in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula, in proximity to Sault Ste. Marie, St. Ignace, and Munising. The area offers a diversity of outdoor recreational activities year-round, as well as historic and cultural attractions.

The Library is housed in the Tahquamenon Area School building located in the center of town. It serves both the student population and the community within the consolidated school district (a population of approximately 7,900). It employs a staff of one full time Circulation Manager and 4 part time assistants. The successful Director candidate will be an approachable, competent individual who brings innovative ideas, a willingness to interact with the community, and who values internal and external customer service. The candidate should have an innovative vision for the Library going forward.

Expectations
The Library Director provides leadership to the staff, and is the public face of the organization, reporting to the trustees of the Library Advisory Board, the County Library Board, and the Tahquamenon Area School Board. The Director works in partnership with the Board to ensure the Library fulfills its mission and creates strategies to assure future success. The Director is also accountable for programming and fiscal integrity of the organization. The Director works with considerable independence subject to Board policies and directives, but shall show resourcefulness, initiative, creativity, and mature judgment in performance of duties. The Director will attend any meetings associated with membership in the Northland Library Cooperative. Reliable transportation is essential.

Qualifications
• Prefer ALA accredited MLS of LMIS
• Minimum of 4 year liberal arts degree
• Several years’ professional experience in a responsible supervisory and or administrative position
• Professional knowledge of library practices, procedures, and technology
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, in English
• Knowledge of public library administrative principles and practices, human resources, and library law
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, advisory board members, school administration, community organizations and the public.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion, and to lead and provide direction.
• Ability to stoop, lift, and carry

This position will include some evening and weekend hours

Salary/benefits package: $38,000 - $48,000 negotiable based on qualification and experience
