ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION Today Kaukauna is home to 15,858 people with its own full-time Police, Fire and Rescue services and a municipally owned electric and water utility. Kaukauna is well-maintained with regular garbage collection, street cleaning, well-lit and well-paved streets and other services vital to keeping our community safe and attractive. Kaukauna boasts a 350-acre Industrial Park Network, complete with rail and heavy truck access.

Our proximity to the Fox River affords our residents with numerous recreational opportunities such as the Historic Grignon Mansion, the 1000 Islands Environmental Center, many parks and sports fields, a public swimming pool, and a public library.

POSITION Assistant Director - Library

DESCRIPTION
1) POSITION SUMMARY

Under supervision of the Library Director the Assistant Director helps manage the library's daily operations, directs programming for all ages, supervises staff as assigned, develops the library collection, and provides administrative support as needed. The Assistant Director acts as direct supervisor of the library in the absence of the Director.
This position is expected to work a standard work week of 37.5 hours and is also expected to participate in various meetings and work-related functions outside the standard work week.
2) MAJOR POSITIONS DUTIES

Assists the Library Director in

Recommending and preparing policies and procedures for the library.
Acting in his or her capacity in the Director's absence.
Supervising and training library support staff working in the library.
Preparing the annual budget.
Acts as one of the library's public representatives to other community institutions and individuals who work with the public.

Oversees library programming by: Developing programs for all ages, developing outreach opportunities to public and private schools and other community organizations and coordinating library marketing.

Oversees library material collections by : Developing subject areas in the library and overseeing material section.

Prepares monthly reports to the Library Board on effectiveness of library services and programs.

Provides assistance to patrons in all aspects of public service.

Attends and logs at least 10 hours of continued educational opportunities annually.

Performs other related work as assigned by the Library Director and performs service desk duties when necessary.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS
a) Master of Library Science from an American Library Association accredited library school.

b) General Qualifications:

Ability to effectively communicate ideas and information both in written and verbal form with library patrons, staff and supervisors.
Firm knowledge and ability to correctly use English grammar and spelling.
Knowledge of and experience in library methods and procedures.
Ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers and supervisors.
Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize work, respond to varied work demands and to make decisions as required.
Ability to use current technology pertinent to libraries and advanced knowledge of contemporary Integrated Library Systems (ILS).
c) Specific Qualifications:

Ability to identify problems and opportunities and establish systematic methods of accomplishing goals.
Ability to effectively evaluate and make decisions based upon experience without supervision.
Ability to formulate technical regulations and instruct other library staff in their use.
Ability to understand library policies and procedures and apply them to library operations.
Ability to gather statistics, analyze information and write reports.
Ability to direct, supervise and evaluate the work of others.
Willingness to participate in continuing education classes or other learning experiences in the areas of library skills, supervisory and personnel practices.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of library services and programs provided by public libraries and of the library principles, procedures, technology and philosophy underlying such services and programs.
Advanced knowledge of the essential library principles, procedures, technology, goals and philosophies of building collections of books and other materials for people of all ages and children in particular.
Ability to plan, organize and carry out library service programs for all ages.
