The Portage Public Library wants to highlight the qualities we are looking for to lead the Youth Services Department. We seek a dynamic, energetic, independent and flexible librarian with cutting-edge ideas, creative design, passionate interest in youth and a unique style, willing to manage experienced staff and work alongside other department managers. This could be an opportunity for a recent graduate with a master’s degree in library science, whose interest is in youth services. This may also be an opportunity for someone looking to move from school to public library work. We are looking for:

· A confident self-starter with ambitious, creative ideas and outstanding programming skills for storytimes, toddler, family and baby programs.

· A skilled selector of both children’s and teen materials for public libraries.

· A decision maker that will guide and nurture the future direction of children and teens, ages 0-18 in the community.

· An involved liaison that will maintain and spark future interest for partnerships with local schools, businesses and non-profits.

· An informed librarian that is hungry to continue learning through ongoing educational and professional development opportunities offered by the South Central Library System and other professional organizations.

· An engaged professional to thoughtfully serve the interests of community leaders, following the completion of our five-year strategic plan.

· An independent thinker willing to establish a confidence looking ahead for Portage—a developing community with a small-town charm and exciting growth potential.

· A Youth Services advocate interested in being supported by a talented and knowledgeable full-time Children’s Assistant, two part-time Children’s Circulation Clerks, a Programming Coordinator that is available for back-up assistance, collaborative participation and program support and a friendly and supportive administrative team.

The hourly wage is $18-$21. The position is full-time with excellent benefits. Email resume and cover letter to [email protected]. Direct any questions to Library Director, Debbie Bird, at [email protected]. The deadline for applications is January 16, 2022. Full job description is available at
