Location
The West Allis Public Library is seeking applicants for a new position, Summer Program and Outreach Intern. The intern will gain practical hands-on experience by providing reference and readers’ advisory at the adult and children’s information desks, providing program and outreach assistance, creating displays and assisting librarians with other projects. The primary focus of this intern position is to assist librarians in outreach events at the West Allis Farmers Market, National Night Out, WAWM School Lunch sites and other offsite events and assist with onsite library programs including, story times, craft programs and other programs for adults, teens and children.

Length of Internship: May- August or September 2022, approximately 20 hours per week.

Library hours are as follows, flexibility with scheduling is required.*
Monday – Thursday: 9:30-8:30
Friday and Saturday: 9:30-5:30

*The work schedule will based on scheduled library programs and outreach events and could change as needed.

The hourly range is $14.00 - $17.00 dependent upon experience and education

Job Summary

Under direct supervision of the Adult Services and Circulation Supervisor, performs a variety of tasks to gain hands-on experience of working in a library providing program and outreach assistance as well as reference services.

Example of Duties
• Assist librarians at outreach events; duties include but not limited to set-up (loading and unloading materials), distribution of information and library materials, facilitate hands-on-activities, provide answers to questions relating to library services, compile outreach statistics and contribute to an end of summer report.
• Assist librarians with library programs including preparation and set-up for adult, teen and children’s craft programs, story times and other special programs.
• Provide assistance at the Information desks, with reference help, technology assistance and readers’ advisory including book display set-ups.

• Attend meetings and training as required or requested
• Follow library policies and procedures
• Communicate clearly with diverse groups in all formats: in person, via the telephone and in writing
• Manage work time to maximize productivity; work as part of a team and individually in self –directed manner
• Act as a library ambassador with patrons both onsite and out in the community
• Ability to work in a busy environment

Minimum Qualifications
Current enrollment or acceptance in a Masters in Library Science program is required.
